Senior officials and people from all walks of life bid farewell to the Hong Kong volunteer who died last month while on his way to delivering quake relief materials to Yushu in northwestern Qinghai province.

The memorial service for Andy Tsang, 35, was hosted Saturday in Beijing. The funeral was attended by senior officials from both the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. Donald Tsang, the chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, sent a letter of condolence.

Andy Tsang, 35, died in a car accident on Oct. 27 while delivering clothing and other winter necessities to primary school students in Yushu, where a 7.1-magnitude earthquake occurred on April 14 leaving about 2,700 people dead.

Peng Qinghua, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said after the ceremony that Tsang was enthusiastic in performing public service, and his love for people in Yushu embodied the saying that "blood is thicker than water."

Peng added that Hong Kong is a philanthropic and loving society and citizens from the mainland would never forget volunteers like Tsang.
