The Central Standing Committee of Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party on Wednesday nominated party chairman Ma Ying-jeou to compete in the Taiwanese leadership election next January
Ma is Taiwan's incumbent leader and the only candidate applying for the KMT's nomination. He is set to face Tsai Ing-wen, who was also nominated on Wednesday by the Democratic Progressive Party for next year's election.
At a meeting of the KMT Central Standing Committee Wednesday, Ma said the reforms he championed have already taken place and that he seeks to continue moving Taiwan forward as he pursues his second four-year tenure.
Ma also told meeting participants that achievements have been made in Taiwan's economic recovery and that cross-Strait relations have been improved since he took office three years ago.
Ma's nomination will be put to a vote at the KMT's general congress on June 25.
