Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday called on the nation to learn and work harder with strong solidarity and high morale in the fields of technology, five days after Saturday's train collision killed 39 and injured nearly 200.
"In the fields of science and technology, in particular, we must have our own brands, our own intellectual property and products of international competitiveness," Wen told the press at the site of the accident, which occurred Saturday night near Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province.
Wen arrived in Wenzhou Thursday morning to mourn the victims of the fatal train collision.
Wen said China has made great achievements since the reform and opening-up three decades ago.
"We know that a nation's prosperity and mightiness must rely on the power of technology and the elevation of people's educational levels," Wen said.
"We need to develop our science and technologies and make breakthroughs to make our technology and equipment safer, more reliable and more competitive," Wen said.
"I still have faith in the future of China no matter it's in development or construction, or in technology or education," Wen said.
An initial investigation into the accident indicates that design flaws in railway signal equipment led to Saturday's train collision, the Shanghai Railway Bureau said on Thursday.
