A manhunt is underway for a prisoner who escaped from Yubei Prison in Xinxiang City, central China's Henan Province, on Tuesday morning.

Dong Yunhai, 23, was sentenced to 14 years behind bars for theft and had served five years in the facility by the time he broke out. So far it's unknown how he managed to escape, Oriental Morning Post reported today.

Several netizens claimed the security on highways linking to Xinxiang had been tightened up and multiple checkpoints were set up to check passing vehicles, the report said.

The prison and Henan Department of Justice declined to comment, according to the report.

Yubei Prison is an institution for major criminals serving long sentences and boasts the most comprehensive facilities after it was renovated in 2005.

The last reported prison break happened in September, when an inmate escaped from prison in Shenzhou City, Hebei Province. He was captured 14 days later in his hometown in Henan.
