Zhou Jiangjiang was the general manager of the Yantai branch of the Tongzhou Construction Company in Shandong Province. He died in a tragic fire at the age of 28 while trying to save his 10 employees on July 2.
The fire broke out in a room at around 1:00 a.m on the company's third floor. In his initial reaction, Zhou ran out of the smog-shrouded building, but he bravely went back in to wake up the other 10 employees despite the choking smog. All the employees came out of the fire unscathed, but Zhou died after inhaling too much smoke.
Zhou was the only son of the family. He was a successful businessman and future inheritor to the family firm's substantial wealth. His heroic deed triggered widespread discussion on several online micro-blogs. People said Zhou set a good example for "the tall-smart-rich" group, a popular online term to describe men of fame and fortune.
Zhou was conferred the title of "Model Worker Ready to Help a Just Cause" and awarded the "May 4 Youth Medal," respectively by Yantai and the Nantong local authorities in July.
