Phoenix TV:

In regard to the anti-corruption campaign, there are concerns it may have some political implications. In other words, as anti-corruption continues, more officials will be exposed, and that is not good for the country's development. Economically, China now faces major downward pressure, so that people may worry that the anti-corruption campaign might become a further drag on economic growth. What is your comment on such concerns?

Chen Xiaojiang:

You have raised two questions concerning whether anti-corruption may affect the CPC's governance as well as the Chinese economy. First of all, we should acknowledge that the majority of Party officials are decent ones. Combating corruption and punishing corruption will not affect the CPC's ruling foundation but reinforce it, apart from gaining more popularity with the public. The CPC Central Committee has insisted on fighting corruption in a determined way since the 18th national congress. The achievements are evident enough as to its effect.

On your second question, you mentioned anti-corruption may affect economic growth. As you all know, corruption is a universal problem that has been in existence since ancient times, and exceptions do not really exist. Combating corruption, cracking down on rent seeking of power and purifying the market environment is, in fact, good for economic development. The anti-corruption campaign eliminates obstacles facing the market mechanism and fully enables the market to play a decisive role, which will facilitate the Chinese economy to develop healthily and continuously. Thank you.
