Construction of the main structure of the 16.65-kilometer bridge spanning the mouth of the Yangtze River between Changxing Island and Chongming Island is completed in Shanghai on Thursday. An 8.9-kilometer tunnel connecting the Pudong New Area and Changxing Island was completed a month earlier. Scheduled to open to traffic in 2010, both the bridge and the tunnel are part of a project that is designed to cut traveling time from downtown Shanghai to Chongming Island to 40 minutes. Chongming is presently only accessible by ferry.
