Diector Chen Kaige's next film is about the gangs of Shanghai in the 1920's and 1930's.
   
Chen Kaige has cut out a rough storyline for this still untitled project, which will follow a young man's life with the gangs, reported China Radio International.
   
Chinese actor Liu Ye and Korean actor Jang Dong-Kun had been contacted to join the cast.
   
Meanwhile, shooting on Chen Kaige's fantasy epic The Promise, or Wu Ji in Mandarin, also starring Liu Ye and Jang Dong-Kun, has finished, and it is due to hit the screen in autumn 2005.
