6.6-magnitude quake hits South Sandwich Islands region

An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted South Sandwich Islands region at about 1432 GMT on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 86.90 km, was initially determined to be at 56.4061 degrees south latitude and 27.0287 degrees west longitude, said the USGS.
