A strong earthquake measuring 5.8 degrees on the Richter scale was recorded in the sea area off Rhodes island between northwestern Greece and Turkey on Sunday afternoon, according to Greek media reports.
No casualties or extensive material damage has so far been reported.
The tremor's epicenter was located about 73 kilometers southwest of Rhodes at a depth of 37 kilometers, according to the Athens Seismic Observatory, which put the quake on magnitude 5.8.
The Euro Mediterranean Seismic Institute, meanwhile, estimated the earthquake at 6 degrees on the Richter scale.
Earthquake-prone Greece and Turkey are regularly hit by moderate and strong earthquakes over the past decades.
