Japan issues heavy rain warnings due to typhoon

The Japan Meteorological Agency ( JMA) on Monday has issued emergency warnings on heavy rain in Kyoto, Shiga and Fukui prefectures as the 18th typhoon, Man-yi, made a landfall near the area earlier the day.

The special warning was been launched for the first time since the warning system was introduced late August.

Local media said more than 320,000 households across the country have been informed to take measures to evacuate as of 10 a. m. local time, as the JMA issued heavy rain warnings and advisories in parts of Kansai and Tohoku area and entire Kanto area, where the typhoon is expected to pass.

Meanwhile, flood and gale warnings are also been activated in the areas, according to the JMA's website.

Local media reported that about three people went missing and about 29 people were injured due to heavy rain and flood.

More than 500 domestic flights have been canceled, with 121 from the All Nippon Airways and 175 from the Japan Airlines. Parts of Tokaido and Nagano Shinkansen lines have also been suspended.

Typhoon Man-yi made a landfall shortly before 8 a.m. near Toyohashi in the central Japan prefecture of Aichi.

As of 8 a.m., it was moving north-northeast at a speed of 45 km per hour. It had an atmospheric pressure of 970 hectopascals at its center, with gusts of up to 162 kph.

The typhoon is expected to move through eastern and northeastern Japan before reaching waters off the northeastern coast of Sanriku on Monday night, according to local media.
