The leatherback sea turtle is the largest of all living turtles. The species has been listed as endangered in many countries, such as the United States, Canada and Australia. The global population for this species was estimated to be 115,000 adult females in 1982. Leatherback populations in the Pacific and Indian Oceans have undergone dramatic declines in the past forty years. The Pacific may now have as few as 2,300 adult females. |
