The Tangshan Earthquake, also known as the Great Tangshan Earthquake, is believed to be the largest earthquake of the 20th century by death toll. Over 240,000 people were killed and more than 160,000 people were recorded as being severely injured. The earthquake devastated the city of Tangshan over an area of roughly 6.5 kilometers by 8 kilometers. Eighty-five percent of the buildings in the city were collapsed into ruins or became uninhabitable. The seismic waves spread far, with damage in cities such as Qinhuangdao and Tianjin, and a few buildings as far away as Beijing were damaged. The economic loss totaled to 10 billion yuan (about 163 million U.S. dollars). |
