The accident took place in the so-called "Palacio de la Musica"in Durango Street on the corner with Salamanca Street. Two people with serious injuries were taken to the nearby Durango Hospital and the Dalinde Clinic, said department head Jose Elias Moreno.
The collapse occurred just as the audience were leaving a concert held in the building. Although some 150 people had attended, most of them had been able to leave before the roof caved in, he said.
Firefighters and other rescue staff are at the scene removing rubble to make sure that no one is trapped inside. Civil protection officials said that they had already begun to check the rest of the three-storey building to ensure that they are not at risk of collapse.
