※ Qian had headed the Village Committee of Zhaiqiao, Puqi Town, Yueqing City five years ago. In 2004, a company acquired more than 140 hectares of land and constructed a large power plant in Zhaiqiao Village, which caused conflicts between the local government and villagers. Qian petitioned for the villagers several times and was eventually imprisoned for two years on illegal land-use charges. The death has stirred strong suspicion among the public. Locals and the online community have questioned the veracity of official conclusions that appeared to lack sufficient evidence. |
