In times of austerity, couples find cabbages could also serve as a Valentine's gift replacing a bouquet of flowers, Daily Mail reported.

The centers of the cabbages, which are vivid purple or soft pastels, give a realistic impression of a rose or chrysanthemum.

And while they offer a colorful display, they come in at just 89 pence each, compared to the 20 pounds for an even modest bouquet.

Even more, they can also be cooked to add a colorful and healthy vegetable accompaniment to a romantic meal for two.

The cabbages have been developed by specialist grower in Lincolnshire.
