On August 19, many Japanese right-wingers, including Japanese Diet members, went to the waters around the Diaoyu Islands to mourn the dead in World War II; some of them even landed on the Diaoyu Islands.

Before that, Japan illegally arrested Chinese activists landing on the Diaoyu Islands, which arouses anger of Chinese citizens and overseas Chinese.

In recent years, turbulences have keep emerging in waters around the Diaoyu Islands. The Diaoyu Islands dispute is gradually intensifying and has become the most controversial issue between China and Japan, which severely infringes Sino-Japan relations.

China's standpoint on the territorial sovereignty of Diaoyu Islands is nonnegotiable. China insists that the Diaoyu Islands are China's inherent territory since ancient times and has the indisputable sovereignty over them. The Japanese government claims that the Diaoyu Islands belong to Japan and denies that they are disputable.

The root cause of the Diaoyu Island issue is that the Japanese militarism is not completely eliminated after World War II. The extremism of the Japanese right wing keeps developing. The Diaoyu Islands issue has turned into an excuse for right-wingers to disturb Sino-Japan relations and win over the domestic public. In addition, in order to expand the economic and strategic space, Japan has been paying attention to exclusive economic zone and continental shelf interests and potential military security values of islands off the coast for a long period.

The United States has made the Diaoyu island issue even more complex. On the one hand, it declares it does not hold a stance on the Diaoyu Islands issue. On the other hand, it claims that the fifth article of the US-Japan Security Treaty is applicable to the Diaoyu Islands dispute. The so-called “Island defense military drill” carried out by Japan and the United States for the first time is interpreted a move of dealing with the future situation of the Diaoyu Islands.

The Diaoyu Islands issue does have a solution. To solve the dispute, various challenges and uncertainties will be met. But we can be fully aware that Japan's attempt of seizing the sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands will never be realized and its petty tricks will never lead to any solution.
