Political solution top priority to save Ukraine

Seeking a peaceful and political solution should be the top priority of the international response to the Ukraine crisis as the Eastern European nation teeters on the brink.
With more parts of the country's east being engulfed by violence, coupled with a spat between Moscow and Kiev, the UN Security Council on Sunday met for an emergency session on the crisis for the 10th time.
Echoing a statement from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, China and many other council members called for constructive efforts from all relevant parties to exercise restraint to de-escalate the situation in eastern Ukraine.
However, Western powers and Russia are still locked in a blame game.
At the meeting, Russia's UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin rejected Ukrainian and Western claims that Moscow was behind the unrest, saying that "it is the West that will determine the opportunity to avoid civil war in Ukraine."
Beyond the spat, one thing is clear: "further disturbances will not serve the interests of any side," as pointed out by Ban.
Constructive dialogue is urgently needed to ease tensions in eastern Ukraine and address all differences within the framework of law and order.
Meanwhile, all related parties need to immediately join the international call for restraint and a return to peace in Ukraine, paving the way for a political solution.
Moreover, as UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Fernandez Taranco said, it is not just Ukraine "that will suffer from a scenario where the likelihood of further bloodshed and violent clashes grows by the hour."
Russia, which shares a long border with Ukraine, as well as Europe at large, will face a spillover effect of the potentially severe consequences in Ukraine. Repercussions would also be felt across entire international community.
It has become painfully evident that the Ukraine crisis will certainly continue to deepen if all the parties concerned fail to urgently employ intensive and constructive efforts to calm the situation.
