Israel has been launching unrelenting attacks on Hamas in the Gaza Strip as well as sent ground force into Gaza recently, as if to make a clean sweep of Hamas there. The current chaos in the district was not only created by Israel, but is result of the complicated interests of both Palestinian and Israeli policymakers.

Although Israel is going all out against Hamas, the relationship between the two is one of "symbiosis," which in biology means two organisms are interdependent. As a matter of fact, Israel and Hamas have been embroiled in a symbiosis of their own in the peculiar "ecosystem" of the Middle East.

For Israel, Hamas is primarily to blame for all sorts of crimes and accountabilities in the region. Since taking control of Gaza in 2006, Hamas has been accused by Israel of all the traumas inflicted on it, ranging from suicide bombs and rocket fire to terrorists and extremism.

Hamas, to a large extent, helps to play down Israel's accountabilities. Its radical ideology and deliberately mysterious image left to the outside world deflates the responsibilities that Israel should take. In this sense, Israel finds it convenient to take Hamas as the scapegoat for all the issues surrounding Palestine and Israel.

Second, Israel finds it acceptable to have Hamas take control of Gaza. Though Hamas is set to launch rockets to Israel and carry out suicide attacks in the densely populated Israeli area, Israel's solid Iron Dome air defense system and its highly capable intelligence work will render Hamas' success highly unlikely.
