Pumpkin lantern, or Jack-o'-lantern associated chiefly with the holiday Halloween, is typically a carved pumpkin. It is named after phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat dogs. To make a jack-o'-lantern, the top of a pumpkin is cut off and the inside flesh is scooped out, and then an image, usually a monstrous face, is carved on the outside surface.
