This picture shows the Yijiang Gate tower in Nanjing during the Republican period. The Yijiang Gate, originally named Hailing Gate, connected the city of Nanjing to the Xiaguan Wharf. It used to have only one gate, but it was expanded to three gates in 1931 when its name was changed. On April 23, 1949, the Chinese People's Liberation Army won a battle to cross the river and accessed Nanjing through this gate. [Photo/China.org.cn]
