The 9th C&D Xiamen International Marathon will take place on January 2, 2011 in the coastal city, the China Athletic Association and Xiamen Municipal Government announced at a press conference held today in Beijing.

Xiamen's Vice Mayor Zang Jiebin said more than 50,000 runners from home and abroad have already signed up for the 2011 race. He said 13 top athletes have so far confirmed they will be taking part, including 2010 Paris International Marathon men's winner Tadesse Tola.

The organizing committee has boosted prize money and pledged a one-million-dollar award for breaking the world record.

In addition to the main event, three subsidiary competitions, a Cross-Straits Invitation Tournament, a Wheelchair Marathon, and a Roller Skating race will be held. There will also be a Forum for Mayors of Marathon Host Cities, a Marathon Sacred Torch Lighting Ceremony, and a Marathon Cultural Experience Festival.

The Xiamen International Marathon was first run in 2003 and is ranked by the IAAF as a Gold Label Road Race. It is famous for its beautiful coastal route which passes through all the major scenic areas of the island city.
