Malaysia wins 1st gold at Asiad in Wushu

Defending champion Chai Fongying won Malaysia's first gold medal at the Guangzhou Asian Games in women's Taijijian and Taijiquan Combined in Guangzhou on Monday.

Chai, 24, scored 19.36 points to win the champion of the competitions in both Taiji sword and shadow boxing under the Taolu category. The Chinese, founder of the sport, are absent from the event.

Japan's Miyaoka Ai outcast Chen Yi Ying from Chinese Taipei by 0.01 point to win the silver medal with 19.34 points. The Japanese veteran took the silver of the same event in the 2002 Doha Asiad too.

"It's my pride to win my country the first medal and I'm so happy to win the gold again," said Chai. "It feels good we have the same people standing at the podium, which reminds me how time flies and we're all getting old."

Malaysia targeted nine golds at Guangzhou. It has won one silver in billiard and three bronze in equestrian, shooting and the wen's Nanquan and Nandao combined in Wushu.

The three medallists have all been trained in Fuzhou, capital of southeast China's Fujian Province for months.

"You can tell that there is only slight difference in our score. We are really familiar with each other and we are good friends," said Miyaoka Ai. "I hope we can move forward together in the future."

The Japanese, 26, hopes her winning can help promote the sports in China.

"We have a lot of lovers. But we don't have any professional athletes like the host China. I would like to take this opportunity to get the sport stand in Japan," she said.

More than 140 players will compete for 15 gold medals in Wushu, a full contact sport derived from Chinese martial art. The Chinese have won four gold medals in the 10 events they participated.

The sport comprises Taolu (set routines), and Sanshou boxing (free sparring).
