Johannesburg – Journalists covering the finals from the new Soccer City stadium are going to need patience in finding their way around the massive complex when they first arrive.
It took around 40 minutes for Sapa journalists to find the parking and the media centre on Thursday – after asking seven volunteers who each gave different directions, starting at the accreditation centre.
The best advice was: "I don't know where the media centre is, but go that way," he said pointing at the new calabash-shaped stadium.
Volunteers then directed the journalists into the stadium perimeter, but when the hacks realised they were getting lost, in desperation asked a telephone technician. He did what the volunteers had been unable to do and showed them the way to the media centre.
The volunteers appeared to be on the defensive, and one appeared almost aggressive when told they were the fifth person asked for directions around the dusty area outside Soccer City.
Bafana head coach Carlos Alberto Parreira was expected to address local and international media at the stadium later on Thursday, ahead of Friday's opening Group A clash against Mexico.
