Zhao Shuang led a big spurt for China in the third quarter as the hosts roared to a 71-53 victory against Brazil on Saturday at the four-nation women's basketball tournament.
Zhao, who scored 18 points Friday as China edged New Zealand 77-70, handed 17 points and nine rebounds. She scored two 3-pointers in the third quarter as China pulled away with a 25-7 run.
Xu Nuo, who stands 1.95 meters tall, added 15 points for the home team and Gao Song had 12 points.
"We played our game and did good job offensively and defensively," said Chinese coach Sun Fengwu.
China led the first half with 34-28. But five 3-pointers helped China extend their advantage to 24, 59-35, with 2:35 minutes left in the third quarter. During the periods, Zhao, Gao and Xu combined 21 points.
Brazil, who beat Australia 67-57 Friday, tried their best but can only cut the gap to 16 points before the lopsided game ended.
"At first half we were ok, but second half were very bad," said Enio A. Vecchi of Brazil coach. "We didn't defense well, we didn't shoot well, especially on 3-pointers."
Brazil recorded 8-0 on 3-pointers and scored 34 percent. Gilmara Justino contributed 11 points for Brazil and Franiele Nascimento added 10. In the day's other game, Australia nipped New Zealand 79-74, who was the only squad without win at the three-day and round-robin tourney.
Center Abby Bishop led Australians with 21 points. New Zealand's Jilian Harmon scored 21 points.
Australia drew level at 39-39 at halftime on Rachael Flanagan's half court 3-pointer at the buzzer. Using their physical advantage and good rebounds, Australia gradually controlled the game and finished the third quarter 61-53.
New Zealand cut it to 69-71 with 3:15 minutes to play. But after Australia made a 6-0 run the game looked beyond doubt.
