Trailing 2-1, Ding made an excellent break of 127 to level the match at the interval. Fu looked set to regain the lead until he missed on 56 in frame five, allowing Ding to make a cool 71 clearance.

A run of 49 helped Ding win the next for 4-2 and he sealed victory in frame seven after Fu fluked the last red but missed the blue to a top corner.

"Marco wasn't playing great today, he didn't bring me problems with his scoring or safety," Ding said. " When he had chances he made 30 or 40s, which gave me a chance."

As part of a star-studded quarter-final line up, Ding will now meet four-times world champion John Higgins, who completed a 5-0 rout of Stuart Bingham in last night's encounter.

"I don't care who I play against. It's more important to dominate the match and take my chances."

In other matches, defending champion Mark Allen came from 2-0 down to beat Robert Milkins 5-2 with top breaks of 82, 61 and 73. Allen now meets Ricky Walden, who came from 4-2 down to beat Welsh Open champion Stephen Maguire 5-4.

World No.1 Judd Trump hit three centuries to demolish Nigel Bond 5-1 and set up a last 8 encounter with Matthew Stevens.

Neil Robertson was convincing in his 5-0 shut-out of Graeme Dott in a mini-repeat of the 2010 World Championship final to secure a meeting with world number two Mark Selby, who enjoyed a 5-1 win over Barry Hawkins in a scrappy tussle.
