Roma was denied the chance to move up to fourth in Serie A after they lost 1-0 at home to Chievo by a late goal from Cyril Thereau on Tuesday.
Roma attacked throughout the game, but all in vain, and Chievo punished their inefficieny in the last minute when Thereau scored on a break.
The win lifts Chievo to safety but leaves Roma's fifth position under threat from Udinese and Lazio, who can go above them into the final Europa League qualification berth with a win on Wednesday night.
Roma interim coach Aurelio Andreazzoli admitted his side did not carry out his tactics all the way.
"We had an idea on how to approach the match, but did not pursue the ideas throughout the game," he said.
"In the first half we were stuttering in our build-up and should've tried to finish the game much earlier. In the final minute, we had this goal against the run of play. We didn't suffer much at the back, but we knew that Chievo were dangerous on the counter," he said.
Chievo interim coach Eugenio Corini said his side put his ideas well into practice.
"Winning in Rome at the 90th minute was a wonderful feeling and nights like this are what make doing this work worthwhile," he sadi.
"The players worked hard and very quickly absorbed my ideas. I have to thank the staff for all their efforts too. Being safe with two rounds to go is a great achievement," he said.
