The Olympic diving champion was dropped from the national team in 2005, for "repeatedly violating the team's disciplines."

The diving prince bagged a gold medal in the men's 10m platform event at the Sydney Olympics and grabbed the doubles' title on the platform in Athens.

After belting his multiple Olympic medals, Tian received numerous invitations to lend his name and face to corporate promotions. His involvement in commercial activities and other disputes with the national team led the team to fire him after repeated warnings.

However, Tian did not cease his diving training and continued to practice with a provincial team. After retaining his men's 10m platform title at the 10th Chinese National Games, Tian announced his retirement from the diving sport on March 25, 2007.
