Dallas Mavericks selected Wang with the 36th pick in the second round of the NBA draft in the summer of 1999.

Wang, the first Asian to play in the American NBA, was dismissed from the national team for skipping the 2002 Asian Games.

On April 10, 2006, Wang returned home from the United States after having been expelled from China’s national team for four years. He publicly apologized for his past mistakes and said he wanted to represent his country in the World Championships later on in 2006, as well as the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

On April 30, 2006, Wang rejoined the national basketball team.
