Manchester United's summer outlay of over £150 million led the Premier League to an all-time record spending for a transfer window. |
Premier League spending reached new heights in 2014, hitting 835 million pounds (1.1 billion dollars) on new players in the summer transfer window alone.
The gross spending was up 30 percent on the previous record of 630 million pounds, which was set last summer.
Manchester United were the biggest spenders with a total of around 150 million pounds, including the British record transfer fee of 59.7 million pounds paid to Real Madrid for Angel Di Maria.
Business advisory firm Deloitte said the spending was linked to the increased revenue each club receives as part of new television rights deals.
Deloitte said Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal, the four clubs in this season's Champions League, combined for 40 percent of the overall spending by Premier League clubs this summer, totalling 342 million pounds.
