Hong Kong, Shanghai and Shenzhen stand out as China's top three cities as measured by the number of skyscrapers each city boasts, according to a list published Monday by skyscraper culture-focused website motiancity.com.
The list, the first of its kind in China, uses the number of skyscrapers to measure a city's competitiveness.
In the list, a skyscraper refers to high-rise higher than 152 meters, or 500 feet.
Hong Kong topped the list with 58 skyscrapers, followed by Shanghai with 51, and Shenzhen 46.
China now has over 200 high-rise towers under construction, a number equal to the current total number of skyscrapers in the United States. It is estimated that in the next three years, a new high-rise will be completed every five days on average in China and by 2016, the country will have more than 800 skyscrapers, four times that of the United States at present.
At present, China is also home to half of the top 10 tallest buildings now standing in the world: Taipei 101(the 2nd), the Shanghai World Financial Centre(the 3rd), the International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong(the 4th), the Nanjing Greenland Financial Complex(the 7th), and the Guangzhou International Finance Centre(the 9th).
