Cambridge came in as the top dog of the leading universities in the world for the second consecutive year, followed by Harvard, MIT and Yale, according to the latest world's university rankings released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a London-based global company specializing in education and study abroad.

The QS currently evaluates over 700 universities in the world and ranks the top 400 based on the following six indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty student ratio, proportion of international students and proportion of international faculty. This is the 8th year the QS published the world's university rankings of its kind. To produce this year's rankings, the QS surveyed more than 33,000 global academics and 16,000 graduate employers.

Despite Cambridge's most coveted performance, the U.S. universities maintain the dominant position, taking 20 of the top 50 spots and bragging 70 of the top 300. The United Kingdom has a total of 37 universities making their way into the top 300, second only to the U.S., and followed by Germany (24), Japan (15) and the Netherlands (12).

This year's top 5 Asian universities include: University of Hong Kong, China (22nd), University of Tokyo, Japan (25th), National University of Singapore (28th), Kyoto University, Japan (32nd) and Chinese University of Hong Kong, China (37th).

A total of 16 Chinese universities are included in this year's top 300 list, with 8 from the mainland, 6 from Hong Kong and 2 from Taiwan. Of the Chinese mainland universities, Peking University is the best performing one, taking the 46th spot, ahead of Tsinghua University (47th) and Fudan University (91st).

Besides the overall rankings, the QS also ranks the universities in five broad faculty areas: Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences & Management.
