University of Sussex |
The University of Sussex is a public research university situated next to the East Sussex village of Falmer, within the city of Brighton and Hove, England.
An idea of constructing a university to serve Brighton was put forwarded as early as in 1911, but the project was halted by World War I. The University was established as a company in 1959, with a royal charter being granted in August 1961.
Sussex became known for its studies of English literature, art history and the history of ideas. In the social sciences the Institute of Development Studies and the Science Policy research Unit achieved international recognition. One of the distinguished contributions of the university is the discovery of buckminsterfullerene (C60) by Harry Kroto, for which he won a Nobel Prize.
The university is currently ranked 11th in the U.K., 31st in Europe and 99th in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It is also a founding member of the 1994 Group, a coalition of research-intensive universities.
