The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is a public research university specialized in the social sciences located in Westminster in central London. Founded in 1895, LSE had an outstanding reputation for academic excellence. It joined the University of London in 1900 and degrees were first issued to its students in 1902.
LSE is organized into around 25 academic departments and 15 research centers. It now has about 9,000 full-time students from 140 countries and regions and 1,300 academic staff. LSE's library, the British Library of Political and Economic Science, contains over 4.7 million volumes and is the world's largest library of social and political sciences.
The school had the highest percentage of world leading research of any university in the UK, topping or coming close to the top of a number of rankings of research excellence.
LSE has produced many notable alumni in the fields of law, economics, business, literature and politics. A total of 16 Nobel Prize winners in economics, peace and literature have been either LSE staff or alumni.
