The White Horse Pagoda, located about 2 kilometers west of Dunhuang, was originally built in 386 A.D. to commemorate the Buddhist Monk Kumarajiva's white horse, which had died on his journey east, a legend said. The 9-storey pagoda, at a height of 12 meters, is made of clay covered in stucco and has been renovated a number of times. Every storey of the spectacular pagoda has its own characteristic and charm.
