Location: Madrid, Spain
Established in 1725
The Botin in Madrid was regarded as the world's oldest restaurant by the Guinness Book of World Records, probably due to its extensive literary documentation. However, it was founded in 1725, not the earliest on this list. A number of famous authors, including Ernest Hemingway, Frederick Forsyth and James Michener have mentioned this Castilian-style restaurant in their works. The restaurant's popular dishes are suckling pig, roast lamb and baby eels, often cooked within its original wood-fired oven.
