Location: Rhode Island, United States

Established in 1673

As the oldest operating tavern in the United States, the White Horse Tavern features all the typical New England charm while serving various delicious dishes. Soon after it was founded in 1673, the tavern became a meeting place for the Colony’s General Assembly, Criminal Court and City Council. William Mayes Jr., one of its first owners, was a well-known pirate, but he only had brief control over the tavern before he gave it to his sister. In the late 19th century, the tavern became a boarding house. After that, it underwent restoration. It reopened in 1957.
