Yantai becomes 'City of Green Food of China'

Shandong's Yangtai was named China's city of Green Food on October 20, making it the first prefectural-level city in China to receive such an honour.

The city in the eastern part of Shandong province received the honor from China Green Food Association, which works to promote natural and healthy food.

With a high-quality strategy for the internationalization and industrialization of agriculture, Yantai has achieved great success in the advancement of the green food industry.

Yantai is currently home to standardized demonstration bases of more than 4,300,000 mu in size, including more than 1,000,000 mu of green and organic agricultural productions bases.

Eight cities and counties, including Laiyang, Longkou and Penglai, were declared state-level agricultural standardized demonstration areas and green food demonstration areas.

The rapid development of Yantai's green food industry has increased the amount of agricultural exports, which amounted to 23 billion dollars in 2008, accounting for 25% of Shandong province's agricultural exports.

At present, Yantai produces the most green food in Shandong, accounting for 15.86% of the province's total production. The city also has the second most number of green food processing factories in Shandong, accounting for 14.23 of the province's total number.
