Festive quartet

The Philharmonia Quartet of Berlin's Beijing concert is titled New Year's Ode to Joy. Members include first violinist Daniel Stabrawa, second violinist Christian Stadelmann, violist Neithard Resa and cellist Dietmar Schwalke. The program on Jan 13 includes Haydn's String Quartets Op 17 No 5, Mozart's String Quartets in D Minor K 421 and Beethoven's String Quartets in E Minor Op 59 No 2. On Jan 14's list are Schubert's String Quartets "Rosamunde" in A Minor Op 29, Erwin Schulhoff's String Quartets Op 1 and Brahms' String Quartets in B Major Op 67.

Chamber trioe

Accomplished violinist Xu Weiling, cellist Zhu Yibing and pianist Sheng Yuan have formed a chamber trio and will debut in Beijing. The program includes Beethoven's Trio for Piano, Violin, and Cello No 7 and Tchaikovsky's Trio for Piano, Violin, and Cello in A Minor. Sheng is famed for his consummate interpretation of Bach's works, in China. Xu's performances are full of emotion and vitality. Zhu, a professor of the Central Conservatory of Music, is a proficient cellist and conductor.

Lens on Macao

A decade after Macao's return to the Motherland and the establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region, a touring photo exhibition recording the changes in Macao is running at Shin Kong Place. There are photos taken by journalists from around the world as well as ordinary people. They portray the old urban architecture of Macao, which is one of the most attractive features of the city. Also featured are Portuguese-influenced architecture, street life, authentic Macao food and locals celebrating traditional festivals, such as Spring Festival and Dragon Boat Festival.

Know your Chinese herbs

At this class, you will learn to identify Chinese herbs and learn about their functions. The history and development of herbal medicines as well as how herbs could help cure common cold and other ailments form part of the lessons. The teachers will also tell you how to find these herbs at your local pharmacy.

Sleeping on tigers

Beijing Music Carnival

Led by Taiwanese female trio S.H.E, and rock trio F.I.R, the 2009 Beijing Music Carnival will be held at the Olympic Sports Center Stadium on Jan 17. Mainland rocker Xu Wei and 2006 Supergirl winner Liu Liyang will also perform on the show. Circus performances and magic shows will take place on the smaller stages. The main performance will open at 7:30 pm and the branch shows begin at 2 pm.

Beatles nostalgia

Nominated for both Golden Globe and an Academy Award in 2007, Across the Universe is an American musical film directed by Julie Taymor. As a loyal fan of the Beatles, Taymor tells a love story through two dozen Beatles songs, set against the backdrop of the 1960s in the turbulent years of anti-war protest, mind exploration and rock 'n' roll.
