Lahu food is said to be spicy and almost all their food is seasoned with chili and salt. The staple diet consists of water-based vegetable curries supplemented by animals caught in the forest. Bamboo, mushrooms and other vegetables collected in the forest are also eaten regularly.

When making mushroom curry, the Lahu add crumbled dry soy bean pancakes to the mixture in order to protect their bodies against any ill effects from poisonous mushrooms.

The baked tea, also called "pop hot tea" or lazhaduo" in the Lahu language, is very easy to make: bake newly picked tea leaves over a fire until they turn frown, then put them in a tea pot, and pour in boiling water. After a short while, the tea is ready to be drunk.
