Two girls in Kashi's old city zone. Kashi, located in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, was once the gateway for the ancient Silk Road, the lifeline for the transfer of goods from China to central Asia and Europe. Its 2,000 year history features distinctively accented ethnically Uygur cultural characteristics. Homes in Kashi's old city district are dilapidated and extremely vulnerable to earthquakes and fire. The district is now under renovation in order to meet national conservation standards for historical and culturally important cities.
