Five Fingers Mountain (Wu Zhi Shan)

The middle of the island is high while the rest is low, thus the Hainan Island takes the shape of mountainous vault where the Five Fingers Mountain (Wuzhishan) and the Parrot Mountain range are the hunch part, gradually descending outwards from the center. The island is made up of by mountainous regions, rugged hills, terraces, and plains with clear stratified physiognomy in the shape of loop.

Mountainous regions and hills take up 38.7% of the whole island, and are the main features of physiognomy in the island. Mostly the coasts are accumulated from eroded volcano basalt in the terraces, evolved from low vale to small bay or accumulated coasts, and layered coasts formed by sand banks. Tropical mangrove and coral reef coasts feature the coastal ecosystem.

Hainan has a tropical moist monsoonal climate. Its annual temperature change is less than 15 degrees Celsius. The coldest months are January and February when the temperatures drop to 16 to 21 degrees Celsius; the hottest months are July and August, and the temperatures are 29 to 38 degrees Celsius. Rates of coronary heart disease, asthma and cerebrovascular diseases are much lower than that in the cold northern parts of the country.

The average annual precipitation is 1,500 to 2,000 mm and can be as high as 2,400 mm in central and eastern areas, and as low as 900 mm in the coastal areas of the southwest. The eastern part of Hainan lies in the path of typhoons, and 70 percent of the annual precipitation is derived from typhoons and the summer rainy season. Major flooding occurs due to the typhoons and they can cause many problems for the local residents.

Hainan boasts a first-class ecological environment. Residents are able to enjoy clear seawater, sparkling white beaches and pure air. By building ecologically friendly villages, Hainan has created markedly improved living conditions for many people in the countryside.

When to visit

The best time to visit Hainan is spring from March to May or fall from October to November. In June, the temperature is too high to do much more swim and better to hide in the shadow. The winter months are also popular for visiting the island although it might be too cold for swimming then.
