Out of the woods

With a riverside view of the Bund, an open-terrace with wood flooring, and plush white sofas, Kitchen Salvatore Cuomo is certainly sophisticated, but without being pretentious. And this pre-mium atmosphere is matched by its top of the range copper wood-fired oven.

The Naples-born head chef oversees a kitchen of international talent including fellow Italians, Japanese, Filipinos and of course, local Shanghainese. And to ensure absolute authenticity, many of the menu ingredients are imported from Italy including the buffalo mozzarella and the tomato sauce.

The Global Times top recommendation is the Sausage, Broccoli, Basil and Mozzarella Pizza (138 yuan), if only for its sheer variety of toppings. The Margherita Pizza, bursting with flavors and fresh toppings, is probably one of the best of its kind in town.

In fact, the only complaint about this Pudong eatery is the prices. A three-course meal can easily set you back around 500 yuan. Our guess is that beautiful views don't come cheap. So if you fancy an excellent, but economical, slice of pizza, our advice is to go for lunch. The set lunch menu costs 128 yuan, featuring tuna tartar for a starter, pizza as the main, and a pie or ice cream for dessert.

The big cheese

La Strada on Anfu Road boasts all the advantages of wood-fired pizza, but without the extortionate prices. A number of traditional dishes appear on the menu including the Melenzane Pizza with eggplant, spicy salami and chili toppings for 78 yuan. The Italian style Quattro Formaggi Pizza has four types of cheese for toppings, among them gorgonzola and buffalo mozzarella.

The Rucola Pizza with Parma Ham is also a top pick containing wafer-thin ham direct from Italy combined with locally sourced rocket leaves. La Strada is slightly limited in offering only pizzas and pastas as mains, although the starters include smoked salmon and beef tattar. For dessert, we recommend tiramisu.
