The 5th series of Renminbi (RMB), including paper money, coins, memorial coins and precious metal coins, were released before Oct 1, 1999. The currency in circulation at present is the fourth and fifth series of RMB.

There are 11 places featured on these notes. Paper money is often regarded as the "business card" of a country, since they represent not only famous scenic spots, but also places with significant historic, cultural and political importance. Located in the Himalayas on the Nepal-China border, Mount Everest is the world's highest mountain above sea level at 8,848 meters.

The 10 Yuan RMB notes from the fourth series, which was released in 1980, featured Mount Everest. Pictured from the Chinese side, Mount Everest is like a giant pyramid, standing solemnly among snowy peaks. The note is colored blue, also a reminder of the highest mountain in the world.
