After bidding farewell to 2010, the world welcomed the new year with many different celebrations. And, as the Spring Festival of 2011 approaches, people also aim for a good start. For shopaholics, Hong Kong is a popular choice for a holiday spending spree. For those longing for icy landscapes, northeastern China will fulfill their wishes. Dreading the chill and cold? Catch a train to the southern province of Yunnan.

Spending spree which will see you using your whole annual bonus

Recommended destination: Hong Kong

Of course, some avid shoppers prefer to go to Seoul or Dubai to spend their money. But Hong Kong draws an increasing number of tourists for its geographic convenience and significant discounts, which are expected to last until lunar new year's eve. Despite the inflated hotel rates, nothing will dampen the enthusiasm of those who like to shop until they drop. And Hong Kong offers much more than shops.

January 4: The Night of International Performance for Spring Festival, in Jianshazui January 5: Firework display above Victory Bay. Tourists can watch from the beach or on a tour boat. January 6: Traditional horse-racing.

Transportation: Take a train at Luohukouan in Shenzhen. You are advised to get off at Jiulongtang station, where you can take the subway to almost anywhere you wish, instead of the terminal.
