As part of the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Communist Party of China, the Badaling Great Wall Film Festival kicked off on July 23rd, 2011. The month-long event will screen eight classic Chinese movies, including "Sparkling Red Star" and "The Warfare of Landmines."
The free event aims to entertain Chinese and foreigners alike. The appeal of vintage outdoor cinema is international; notorious in rural China, its popularity also spiked in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s, with the success of drive-in theatres.
Watching classic movies in an old-fashioned outdoor cinema creates a historical atmosphere for the event that allows visitors to reflect on China’s past. This unique cultural gathering provides a whole new experience of the Great Wall. In addition, visitors will be given the rare opportunity to climb the illuminated Great Wall at night.
How do I get there?
From Deshengmen station near line 2, take bus 919 traveling north. Or, from Xizhimen station on line 2, take line S2 at the North Railway Station (Beijing Bei Zhan). From either the Badaling train station or bus station, walk up the hill until you enter the town. Continue on the main road, past a second main gate, and the film festival will be your right.
