The Shaolin Temple, the ancient Chinese monastery famed for its Buddhist traditions and kongfu, signed an agreement worth 100 million yuan with the Henan branch of the Bank of China on Wednesday, to help restore the temple buildings to their former glory, the Xinhua News Agency reports.

The temple administration will repay the loan within three years using the admission charges that visitors pay to enter the temple.

The 1,500-year-old temple has frequently been criticized for its commercial operations, such as kung-fu shows, film production and online sales under the leadership of Shi Yongxin, its current abbot.

Previous reports have revealed that the annual admission charges of the ancient temple could reach more than 100 million yuan.
