Xumifushou Temple [cdmtis.com] |
- Location: Chengde City, Hebei Province
The Xumifushou Temple (须弥福寿之庙) lies amid the mountain north of the Chengde Mountain Resort, and east of the Putuo Zongcheng Temple in Chengde, Hebei Province. It's one of the eight famous outlying temples of the resort.
This magnificent temple was built in 1780 during the reign of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) to house a visit by the sixth Panchen Lama who traveled a long way to the resort to celebrate Qianlong's 70th birthday. Therefore, the 136,700-square-meter temple was mostly built in the style of the Tashilunpo Monastery in Shigatse of Tibet, where the sixth Panchen Lama lived.
The temple incorporates three parts. Situated in the front courtyard are the temple gate, the five-arch stone bridge, the stone tablet pavilion and white platforms. In the middle courtyard stands the triple-tiered Grand Red Platform, featuring the main building: the Hall of Excellence and Grandeur. The most impressing part of the Hall of Excellence and Grandeur is the eight gold-gilded copper dragons lining the ridges of the roof. The rear courtyard is where Panchen and his disciples lived. At the northern end of the temple is a seven-tiered octagonal tower with its top beautifully yellow tiled glaze.
