The Cave of Peking Man

- Location: Fangshan District, Beijing

Zhoukoudian (周口店遗址) lies 50 kilometers to the southwest of Beijing proper, and is the former resting place of Peking man, a Homo erectus pekinensi. The remains of Peking Man are believed to be approximately 200,000 to 500,000 years old. Initially famous for its limestone production, since the discovery of a complete skull on December 2, 1929, Zhoukoudian has become renowned as the "home of the Chinese ape-man."

The government-funded Zhoukoudian Relics Museum of Palaeonthropology was built to preserve the Peking Man discovery site. The museum consists of two parts: the cave of Peking man and exhibition halls. The exhibition halls are divided into seven rooms, introducing the life, environment and conditions of the Peking Man.
