The ethnic Oroqen people of northeast China, are observing an occasion of their own--the Gunlomta Festival.

More than 500 representatives from different parts of the region, along with Mongolian, Tibetan, Manchu, Hui and Korean peers are joining forces to celebrate.

A grand gala was set up for the opening night on Monday. It burst at seams with performances by local artists of all ages. A septuagenarian folk artist displayed unique Shaman dances; ethnic ballads chanted; and costumes went on showcase.

A bonfire party, meanwhile, added even more heat and energy to the festival. Further events are scheduled for days to come. These include symposiums on ethnic culture studies, paper-cutting and tree barks carving exhibitions, and sporting events - like wrestling.
